Nancy Hartevelt Kobrin, Ph.D.
Israeli American Psychoanalyst | Counterterrorism Expert
Psychological analysis for security, conflict, and strategic decision-making.
Nancy Hartevelt Kobrin, Ph.D., is an Israeli American psychoanalyst and counterterrorism expert whose work applies psychological analysis to security, geopolitics, and asymmetric conflict. Her research focuses on the psychological dynamics of jihadist violence, early development, and the role of unconscious processes in radicalization and psychological warfare.
Drawing on clinical training and field experience, her work translates psychoanalytic insight into frameworks relevant for military, intelligence, and policy audiences. She examines how ideology, identity, and trauma shape behavior in conflict environments—and why misreading these dynamics carries strategic consequences. Her work also includes citizen diplomacy and informal engagement related to Somaliland, Somalia, Pakistan, and historic nations in the region, including the Pashtun.

About
A psychoanalyst who becomes a counter terrorist expert delving into the mind and body language of the jihadi is a rarity. This is what I do - one of the deepest dives to date, to the best of my knowledge, into the mind of the jihadi. Having taught military and police, I realized that they do not have the opportunity to study early childhood development which is critical in order to understand why jihadis do the violent things that they do. They have a rage that exceeds murder itself. They annihilate the other and produce body parts as in serial killing. They are the tip of the spear. A Soldier’s Guide to Hamas’s Genocidal Psychosis
The Unconscious in Psychological Warfare — Beyond Ideology, Before Words
Atzmaut Press, 2025
This book provides soldiers, analysts, and decision-makers with a psychological framework for understanding Hamas beyond ideology or political narratives. Integrating psychoanalytic theory with applied security analysis, it examines the unconscious dynamics underlying genocidal violence and psychological warfare, offering tools to help soldiers process their experiences and think more clearly under extreme operational conditions.
Written as a practical guide rather than an academic treatise, the book is intended for field use by soldiers and researchers.
